Architectural Lighting Design - South Devon

Ed Harty is an independent architectural lighting design consultant based in South Devon. He is passionate about enhancing our experience of places.

Working on internationally acclaimed projects with award winning architects, interior and landscape designers, he has helped them deliver exquisitely lit schemes to valued and prestigious clients.

With over ten years in the industry, Ed has extensive knowledge of light and design. He worked as senior project designer at leading London-based studio Pritchard Themis where he lead a wide range of projects in the commercial, private and public sectors before relocating to Devon and forming his own studio.

Ed spent 2 years as head of design and technical for One Eighty Light founded by Stephen Lisk, who was President of CIBSE in 2018-2019, awarded the CIBSE gold medal in 2022 and has more than 30 years of experience working in the lighting industry. Based in the medieval market town of Totnes, South Devon they covered much of the South West, occasionally working on London-based projects and further afield.

Ed now spends his time tinkering away in a rural workshop with a group of creative tinsmiths, metalworkers and lighting fanatics building beatiful sculptural pieces for the likes of Michael Anastassiades, Beata Houmann, Howe, etc. He occasionally dips his toes into architectural lighting design work, when the right project comes up.

Your project is unique and will receive a tailored approach. By implementing continual R&D to best understand the latest lighting technologies while also maintaining a craft-conscious vision, the mission is to deliver refined functionality and a carefully considered aesthetic – helping to bring your projects to life.

Ed studied Interior Architecture and Design at Oxford Brookes University (BA) and the University of Brighton (MA). He is an external design critic at the University of Westminster. Due to his Anglo-Swiss roots, he speaks both French and English fluently.

When not lighting, Ed can be found exploring beautiful buildings, strumming a guitar or banjo with his eyes shamelessly closed, or jumping in the River Dart – preferably from a height.

If you are creating spaces or buildings that deserve to be experienced in their best light, require bespoke lighting design consultancy or would just like to chat about how to make things sparkle, Ed is happy to help. Get in touch: ed.harty@gmail.com
